Oakridge Equine Hospital has an internship position available for 2017-2018. The internship runs from June 1, 2017- May 31, 2018. We are looking for an individual with a good work ethic, team player and high intellectual curiosity.
The goal of the internship is to provide a quality education in clinical equine medicine and surgery with hands on experience and mentoring by surgeons. If participation is maximized by the intern, that individual should be able to excel as an applicant for a residency program or further employment in equine private practice. The position is meant to be conducted in a learning environment with supervision by a senior clinician.
Our internship is a structured program, with interns rotating on a monthly basis between 5 surgeons and anesthesia. Interns will be expected to assist on any surgeries, lameness exams and diagnostic procedures performed by the surgeon they are assigned to for the month. Veterinary technicians and assistance do perform daily treatments on all horses in the hospital, however interns are responsible for their patients' treatment orders, surgery reports, discharge instructions and performing any advanced treatments.
Interns will also be exposed to advanced diagnostic imaging such as digital radiographs, musculoskeletal and abdominal ultrasound and MRI. We average 700 anesthetic procedures per year and see multiple medical cases (colitis, pleural pneumonia, sick foals, etc).
Interns are on call 2 weekends a months and 3-4 nights per week. While on call an intern will be assigned to one of the following: surgery, anesthesia or ambulatory/secondary. Interns not scheduled to be on call during the weekend, will not have any patient responsibility.
One intern will be assigned to present a journal article at our weekly journal club. If an intern expresses interest, there are opportunities to perform retrospective clinical research.
