New England Animal Medical Center offers a rotating internship with a primary focus on clinical training with weekly didactic experiences and quality of life. The internship includes rotations in internal medicine, surgery, and general day practice that total approximately 50% of the interns' time. The remainder of the internship time is spent on emergency receiving and critical care rotations. On all rotations including overnights, a senior staff doctor is scheduled. Clinical training allows for primary case responsibility and the opportunity to be the primary surgeon on emergency cases under the supervision of senior staff and specialists. In addition to the intensive training in the core rotations, the program includes exposure to cardiology, radiology and oncology. We currently have residency training programs in surgery and in emergency and critical care medicine. External rotations can be arranged to broaden the internship experience. The didactic components of the program include topic based lectures, journal club, EKG rounds and morbidity and mortality rounds. In addition, interns may attend weekly resident level seminars. The hospital is fully equipped including an on-site clinical laboratory (CBC, chemistry, urinalysis and culture, blood gases, lactate, blood typing, coagulation monitoring and microbiology), a mechanical ventilator, EKG monitors, blood pressure monitors for direct and indirect blood pressure, pulse oximetry, end-tidal CO2, oxygen cages, imaging equipment including IDEXX digital radiology, ultrasound, CT, and an oncology treatment room with a chemotherapy hood. We also have rigid and flexible endoscopy equipment. Our surgery service is equipped with a surgical laser, arthroscopy, laparoscopy and ASIF bone plating. Additionally, we have an in-house blood bank. Radiographs are submitted for interpretation by board certified radiologists. In house echocardiography and cardiology consultations are available 3 days a week. The goal of the program is to provide solid clinical training in preparation for a residency training program or private practice. We enjoy an excellent relationship with local veterinarians who refer a wide variety of emergency, critical care, surgical and internal medicine cases. Our goal is to make this internship rewarding and educational for both the interns and our staff. Interns will have time to study and read about their caseload to further their education. The interns are scheduled for a five day work week with no clinical responsibility on the two scheduled days off. Interns are required to attend intern rounds and encouraged to attend resident rounds on their days off. We have a mentorship program and work hard with our interns to assure they are qualified to move on in their desired career path. Our interns have gone on to specialty residencies (Anesthesia, Dermatology, Surgery, Cardiology, Oncology, and Internal Medicine) and specialty internships (Surgery, Internal Medicine, Zoo Animal, and Neurology) in addition to general practice.
