Austin Pets Alive! is a non-profit shelter organization that rescues animals directly from euthanasia lists of nearby shelters. As a result of taking in the neediest animals, 85% of our rescues come in with some sort of condition. The medical team participates in emergency triage, soft tissue procedures, fracture management, hospice, and internal medicine cases. We manage an intense internal medicine caseload including diabetes mellitus, hyperthyroidism, CKD, and CHF. Specialized life-saving programs such as our Parvo ICU, Bottle Baby Program, Ringworm Ward, and FeLV sanctuary sets us apart from other shelter experiences.
Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) is seeking an Associate Shelter Veterinarian to work with our team of veterinarians, technicians and support staff/volunteers in providing the most effective medical care to our rescue animals. APA! has become one of the country’s No-Kill leaders by innovating and maintaining programs, in turn, lending Austin the title of the largest No-Kill city in the nation. This position plays an important role in maximizing the number of lives that APA! is able to save by providing quality medical care in a cost and time effective manner. The ideal candidate will have at least 3 years of small animal experience and be comfortable with triage, using systems and protocols, high quality- high volume spay/neuter and a high volume medical caseload. We are looking for a veterinarian who is excited by the challenge of making decisions based on physical examination/carefully chosen diagnostics/history without all the bells and whistles of a full lab/referral hospitals.
This Associate Veterinarian Position reports directly to the Medical Director.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Effective case management for on-site, hospitalized and foster animals
Daily treatment of hospitalized and Parvo ICU patients
See appointments with foster animals
Ability to spay/neuter at least 30 -50 patients a day
Visiting the dog kennels, cattery, nursery, FeLV, isolation and ringworm wards to assess health
Effective communication skills and the ability to work as a team
Treatment of various shelter environment conditions such as dermatological and anxiety issues
Develop and amend protocols to maximize shelter animal health, while minimizing resource usage
Utilize support staff and volunteer help to maximize veterinarian time

Surgical suite including 2 anesthesia machines and 2 surgery tables
Dental prophy and extractions
When warranted, we can raise funds to send out CBC, chemistry, and other lab tests. We have an ultrasound technician who volunteers her time, and can send off for specialist interpretation on occasion. We utilize a mobile orthopedic surgeon that visits weekly to monthly for complicated orthopedic procedures that cannot be managed through support. We have relationships with other specialists in the area to help with more challenging cases.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:
License to practice veterinary medicine in Texas.
Trained in high quality-high volume spay neuter with the ability to perform a minimum of 30 surgeries in a day.
One year of experience as a licensed veterinarian.
PHYSICAL JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to routinely lift 40-50 pounds
Must be able to work around animals (including diseased, injured, and/or potentially aggressive animals), loud noises, chlorine or other chemicals, and inclement weather

This is a full-time position, 40 hours/week minimum, and salary and based on experience. Must be willing to work on-call if late night emergencies occur.
