MSPCA-Angell is pleased to announce a new paid internship position in community practice/small animal medicine and surgery internship position for its Angell at Essex location in Hathorne, MA starting in June 2020. Angell at Essex is a new teaching clinic located at Essex North Shore Agricultural and Technical School (“Essex Tech”), a vocational technology high school on the North Shore of Boston. The Veterinary Science program at Essex Tech provides hands-on training for motivated high school students with the intent to train them for careers as receptionists, veterinary assistants and technicians, and veterinarians. These students learn under the supervision of MSPCA-Angell clinicians in a non-profit setting with a special focus on low-income clients. This internship position is unique in that it provides the intern with opportunities to learn medicine in a high-quality clinical setting as well as gain valuable teaching experience from interacting with and mentoring the high school students.
The intern will spend ten weeks training at the main MSPCA-Angell Boston facility, rotating through several clinical departments, before transitioning to the Angell at Essex facility for the remainder of the internship. After completing these rotations, the intern will provide primary care, including medicine and surgery, at the Angell at Essex Community Veterinary Clinic. The intern will have two surgery days per week to help develop strong skills in dentistry, soft tissue, and orthopedic surgery. The intern will be mentored and evaluated by the medical director at Angell at Essex on their professional performance, communication skills, and progress in the pursuit of knowledge and clinical aptitude. No weekend or holiday duties are required at the Angell at Essex location, although they may be required during clinical rotations at Angell Boston.
The goal of this internship is to provide the new graduate with a strong foundation in general medicine and surgery in a community practice setting. From this foundation, the intern will be able to develop strong clinical skill, critical thinking, ethics, communication skills, and a continued love of learning, teaching, and community service. The intern is expected to learn all aspects of hospital procedures including communicating with clients and other veterinarians, managing a wide variety of medical and surgical cases, generating appropriate estimate, and running and interpreting in-house laboratory tests.
Applicants will be considered on the basis of their academic record, letter of intent, and letters of recommendation. A personal, SKYPE, or telephone interview is strongly recommended. Please mail the medical director, Dr. Erin Turowski at email@example.com to schedule an appointment. The Angell at Essex internship is a challenging and exciting opportunity with an emphasis on mentoring, teaching, and surgical skills. At the end of the internship term, the candidate will be well-prepared to practice general medicine at a high level. The evolution of the program is ongoing.
