Bay State Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Services (BSVESS) is actively seeking Veterinarians interested in Emergency Mentorship to join our dynamic team. We’re excited about the expansion of our services and team, and we invite you to be a part of it!
This is a one-year program including structured skills and knowledge development as well as supervised emergency practice. Participants will be mentored directly by highly experienced emergency clinicians (most with 10+ years of experience in a specialty hospital environment) and board-certified specialists.
Our Emergency Mentorship positions are available at Bay State Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Services (BSVESS) in Swansea, Massachusetts in partnership with Ocean State Veterinary Specialists (OSVS), a large and busy 24-hour emergency and specialty referral center located in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. We offer referral and emergency services to the RI, eastern CT, and southern MA areas. There is no general practice associated with the hospitals.
Who should complete this mentorship program?
Veterinary school graduates who have an interest in practicing as emergency clinicians, especially those interested in having the skills to do more advanced medicine than an urgent care facility.
Veterinary school graduates who are unsure if they want to pursue a career as an emergency clinician, possibly pursue a residency, or work in a high quality GP that does a lot of their own ER work.
Details of the Program:
There is no commitment to stay beyond the one year program, but any participants who complete the program and meet the skills and knowledge requirements for an ER position will be offered an ER position at one or both of our hospitals at full ER clinician compensation.
Benefits: Full health insurance, all licenses and dues required to practice, professional liability insurance.
5 day work week (guaranteed 2 days off from clinical duties per week). Participants may occasionally be asked to join didactic activities that take place on days off.
First 6 months at $70,000/year (same as internship)
Fully supervised ER/Inpatient management shifts with 1:1 case review
Curated didactic activities to include:
CPR/Recover
Point of Care Ultrasound Techniques
Emergency radiograph assessment
Emergency procedure wet labs
“Soft skills” training including client communication, time management, self-care strategies and stress management
Limited rotations through specialty services at OSVS
Second 6 months at $130,000/year
Functioning as an ER clinician alongside experienced emergency clinicians (you will not be alone for any of your shifts)
Continued opportunities to participate in didactic activities offered to interns at OSVS
Weekly case review with a designated ER clinician
Alternate Track Option:
After the first 6 months, the participant may have further defined their career goals and the program can adapt to help them to achieve these goals by:
Switching to the internship program for the last 6 months if they would like the option to pursue a residency. If they choose this path, their salary stays at the $70,000/yr rate.
Extending the training program by 3 months to gain emergency surgery training.
There is so much more to learning to be an emergency clinician than just learning how to perform the skills. Patients present to emergency facilities in the most severe stages of medical illnesses, requiring a depth and breadth of understanding of what priorities should be addressed and an ability to recognize critical signs of patient instability. The emergency clinicians at BSVESS have the experience of both seeing a tremendous variety of cases on emergency receiving shifts, but also managing critically ill or injured inpatients in an environment of medical excellence. Participants in the mentorship program will have the opportunity to receive one-on-one mentoring while learning to manage emergency patients at the high standard maintained in a specialty hospital. This opportunity will prepare the emergency clinician for work in any type of emergency setting with confidence.
